Acids and things that go boom! This is what most people think when they hear the term chemistry. Either that, or chemistry is hard (from those that took it and did not do too well with the subject) Chemistry is like magic! To someone looking on, it does appear to be magic, or at least, unexplainable. For those that study and experiment with chemistry, they know some of the secrets and it is not magic at all, but simply matter (substances) doing what they are supposed to do based on their structure and design. But, the "magic" and excitement are still there. Chemistry is a subject that connects the abstract "world" with the tangible, reality around us. Because of this, it is a unique subject, requiring our minds to think and use parts of our brain, that other subjects do not use. Chemistry is exciting. Chemistry develops problem solving skills, which we all need to do in our life, whether we study chemistry or not. Chemistry gives us a knowledge that most people don't have, which allows the student of Chemistry to make good decisions regarding the many products out there for common every day use, as one example. Chemistry opens a whole new world to the student. |
