Overall Lab Class Policies
The lab class is a place to actively observe and experiment with concepts in science. Even
though the overall atmosphere in the class is very informal and a safe, fun environment, it
is understood that the student's primary purpose is to learn science through the lab
activities. Students are expected to respect each other, the instructor and any other adult
that helps in the class. Students are expected to control their language and actions before,
during and after the lab class. No negative or inappropriate language will be tolerated.
Students are expected to dress with appropriate clothes that do not offend or distract
other students. Students are expected to remain in the lab class or designated areas.
Students are expected to respect the property and building where the labs are conducted.
If your student can not adhere to these expectations, the lab class can not
accommodate your student, at this time.
Instructor and Parent Responsibilies
Each student and parent are responsible for the "course work" to be done at home. You
may use any book that fits the outline of the topics done in lab (mostly for the High School
labs) as these are designed to stand on their own. Although, the recommended books are
listed on the Lab Classes page, it is understood that Labs 4 Home will supplement the
"course work" with the lab experience, providing all the supplies including all written lab
material and the location of the class. We will be happy to assist you where needed with
the lab work or any information regarding the science "course work", in class as time
permits, or through a special email that will be given to the students and parents.
Finances
The class fee is for the whole 34 week lab. If your student is unable to attend a few
classes the fee is still the same. Exceptions to this would be if a student joins a class later
in the year where the class fee will be prorated. There will be no refunds for anyone that
needs to move out of the area or if you drop the class during the school year for any
reason unless prior arrangements are made before classes begin. Special considerations
are at the discretion of the Instructor.
Lab Safety
Since this is a "lab environment" where chemicals, glass, and fire are used in some labs,
every student and parent needs to understand that the potential for injury is present.
There will be no unauthorized experiments done or "playing" done while in the lab. The
students are expected to wear eye-protection (provided) when doing experiments.
Students should wear appropriate clothes (not their Sunday best clothes!) Covered
shoes are mandatory. Lab aprons are available for those that request them. Safety
equipment will be present at every lab class. If students follow these guidelines and the
lab instructions there should be no issue.
Please Note: Especially for those whose heart rate just elevated a bit, aside from a
few minor burns (students touching hot glass) there has never been a major or even
minor incident in the lab classes.
